Food shortages and steeply rising food prices have already hit Kenya. July 2022 has seen citizen street protests because of the high food cost inflation in Nairobi.

The people of the village Enkusero Sampu face a desperate food situation. It is 20 miles over mountainous tracks to the nearest town with consistent food sourcing - a difficult journey to walk and carry back a meaningful amount of food.

The village owns one motorbike (purchased by Hope for the Future Africa Inc). But a single motorbike and driver is unable to transport anything near sufficient food for the entire village. A second motorbike would cost $1400, and would double the amount of food basics we could bring in.

Food Shortages in Kenya - Remote Villages Hardest Hit

Hope for the Future Africa Inc has rented vehicles during the Covid-19 food shortage. Daily rates are from $250-350 a day. The purchase of a good used all-terrain vehicle for $10,000 is essential to combatting village food insecurity and is our premier funding goal.

The food basic brought into the village is cornmeal. A pound of cornmeal can be stretched to feed one person for almost a week and costs are rising steeply. Our food shortage fund also prioritizes the purchase cornmeal.

The people of Enkusero Sampu are pastoralists. All their wealth and almost all their possessions are in the form of cattle and goats. They raise, eat, and sometimes sell their livestock for money to buy cornmeal and other necessities. The majority of the animals must be kept alive and healthy to keep the herd viable. Farming in the semiarid location demands water infrastructure and specialized training, and is a long-term goal, but without generous funding it is not an option now.

When faced with a world-wide food crisis, the people of Enkusero Sampu are limited in resources, transportation, and options.
